Kahuku is a city on the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. While the area is known for big waves, unmatched surfing conditions and good food trucks, Kahuku High School is also known for their sports teams, especially their football team.
In late 2016, the Kahuku Red Raiders football team (ranked 17th in the nation) played against the Number 1 ranked team in the county, Bishop Gorman, in Las Vegas. The game was important for Kahuku because it gave them (and their players) even more time in the national spotlight.
Known for their loyal fans traveling with the team wherever they go, Kahaku played a game in Utah where 8,000 fans attended, many of whom traveled from Hawaii to watch the game. The game in Las Vegas was expected to have even more in attendance because so of the close ties between Hawaii and Las Vegas – after all, Las Vegas is known as Hawaii’s 9th Island.
Obviously, the biggest challenge faced for any team when they travel is covering the costs and expenses of traveling. Having an entire team travel (players, coaches, administration, parents, alumni) can get expensive but even moreso flying from Hawaii to Las Vegas for the game.
This is when the Las Vegas Kahuku Alumni Association reached out to us. They told us they wanted to accomplish two things:
1) Have shirts available for family, friends and fans to wear to show their support at the game, and
2) Help raise money to help cover the costs of hosting the players and coaches while staying in Las Vegas.
They first thought about pre-ordering a large amount of shirts but the issue was they didn’t know how to breakdown the sizes. When ordering large quantities, it’s very easy to order too much, or too little, of a size. Throw in different color and style options, and it becomes even that much harder.
This is when they decided to put their shirts and hoodies on our online store where people could order what they wanted online. The alumni did an exceptional job of spreading the word to family, friends and fans and ended up selling more than 100 shirts and raising more than $1,000 which all went to helping the team with travel expenses.
